How a bra should fit properly
Many women wear a bra that doesn’t fit quite right without even realizing it. A poor fit can affect your comfort, support, and the way your clothes fit. When a bra fits correctly, it provides the support you need, feels comfortable, and stays in place—without needing to be adjusted throughout the day.
How to check if your bra fits correctly
Finding the right fit is about more than just wearing the right size. A bra should provide support in the right places, follow the shape of your body, and feel comfortable all day long. That’s why it’s helpful to check each key part of the bra individually.
Below, we’ll show you what to look for—and how a bra should fit when it’s the right fit for you.
The bra band
The band provides most of the bra’s support, so getting the band fit right is especially important. It should sit level all the way around your body and stay in place throughout the day. It should feel firm and snug, but still comfortable.
If the band rides up at the back, it’s too large. If it feels excessively tight, it’s too small. The right fit should feel snug without causing discomfort.
The cups should fully contain your breasts
The cups should follow the shape of your breasts and fully contain the breast tissue. Your breasts should sit naturally and comfortably inside the cups. A bra in the right size creates a smooth, natural shape that follows the contours of your bust.
If your breasts spill over the top or edges of the cups, the cups are too small. If there are gaps or wrinkles in the fabric, the cups are too large.
The center gore should lie flat
The center gore—the section between the bra cups—is an important indicator of fit. When an underwire bra fits correctly, the center gore should lie flat against your breastbone.
If the center gore doesn’t sit flush against your body, or the underwires angle outward, it’s often a sign that the bra isn’t fitting properly. You may want to try a different style or go up a cup size.
The straps shouldn’t do all the work
The straps help keep your bra in place, but they shouldn’t carry the weight of your bust on their own. When a bra fits correctly, the straps should stay securely in place without feeling too tight, digging into your shoulders, or slipping down.
If the straps leave deep marks or dig into your shoulders, it’s often a sign that the band is too loose and isn’t providing enough support. If the straps keep slipping down, they may simply need adjusting, or the bra itself may not be the right fit.
The underwire should follow your breast shape—not press into it
With underwire bras, it’s important that the underwire follows the natural shape of your breasts and fully surrounds the breast tissue without pressing into it. The underwire should sit around the breast tissue—not on top of it—and should never feel sharp or uncomfortable against your skin.
If the underwire rubs, pokes, or becomes uncomfortable during the day, it’s often a sign that the bra doesn’t fit correctly. The cups may be too small, or the bra style may not be suitable for your breast shape.
How should a wireless bra fit?
With wireless bras, it’s still important that the bra follows the shape of your breasts and provides the right level of support. Without an underwire to shape and support the bust, the fit of the band and cups becomes especially important.
A wireless bra should fit snugly against your body and provide natural support without feeling loose or unstable. If the bra shifts out of place, doesn’t provide enough support, or feels uncomfortable, the size or style may not be right for your breast shape.
The right fit also depends on the bra style
Even if you’re wearing the correct size, the style of bra can make a big difference to how it fits. Breast shape, support needs, and personal preferences vary from person to person, so one bra style may suit you better than another.
